October 10th to 14th, 2013, was LFR's fall horse camp at Los Vaqueros in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains. We arrived at 2:30 on Thursday, and checked out by noon on Monday, the 14th. Friday night was dinner at the lake restaurant for a wonderful fish fry. Saturday night we will had wine tasting at about 4:30 and then 5:30/6:00 pm our famous potluck dinner, followed by campfire fun. The weather was wonderful for lots of trail riding each day.
A quick recap of events by Cyndi Denny:
Well, if you didn't make Horse Camp, you missed a great time. The trails were a little more challenging thanks to downed trees, exposed rocks, trail erosion from a rain storm the night before camp started. On the upside, there were no dust or bugs; Signs are posted on Cold Stream / Visitor Center warning of aggressive wasps. One wasp did get into one rider's helmet, rider lost the fight. Brian R. does a great reenactment of this event. Weather was sunny and great during the day but cold at night, we are talking 36 degrees folks! Our members in tents, trucks, uninsulated gooseneck are hearty souls! Camp was surrounded by deer and turkeys. We did not hear coyotes this camp as we usually do at our prior camps.
All the dogs had a great time during playtime. Our Treasurer, Joyce, had a great fun running the wine tasting. The Club sold 32 corrals, and we managed to squeeze a multitude of cars, trucks, trailers, RVs, LQs, and campers into the small parking lot. The Friday night fish fry was lots of fun with approximately 30 members going. The Saturday night potluck had a huge amount of delicious food. The club provided three Tri Tips, and we ate it all!!!
As most know, we women riders always out number the men, but happily we had a great group of guys/husbands/significant others join the fun: Steve Denny, Paul Bitando, Stu Edleson, Glen Morgan, Brian Richmond, Don, Mr. Karcher, Gary, and additional fellas joining their wives for the potluck, Roger, Kennie, and Don;
WIP - Trail Report: Trees across the following trails:
1. Out of group camp, the Los Vaqueros trail that forks left to go to the meadow for the lake loop has a down tree, you can get around it, but easier to take Vern Whitaker out of group camp.
2. On the lake loop (Minshall Trail), closest to the lake between the Mine trail connections, is another down tree with lots of branches, you can get around this as well. No doubt the mounted patrol has already seen this.
3. On Cold Stream, just north of the Visitor center, another tree across the trail. Most horses will have to jump this, while taller horses (lucky owners) could still step over it. Big opportunity to ride your horse's neck if you are not ready for the backend of your horse to clear the tree. Again this would apply to short horses.
